A thousand stars shone last night
above highway one south
in the silence.
It’s been a long time since
I’ve seen more than one
or two
faintly flickering above
the telephone poles
and the traffic.
They have not lost their power
or their brilliance.
We alone have lost our vision,
our clarity.
Our spotlights
and our neon lights
are cancerous stars
enveloping the universe.
